Should I Upgrade to a 5080 GPU Even with a CPU Bottleneck?

I'm thinking about upgrading my PC with a new GPU, specifically the 5080. Initially, I had plans to replace my motherboard, RAM, and CPU, but with rising costs for RAM and CPUs, I'm considering just getting the GPU for now. I know that the 5080 might run into some CPU bottlenecks, but I want to know if I would still see a significant performance boost that justifies the purchase. My main focus is on playing FPS games like Rainbow Six at 2K resolution with 240 FPS; right now, I'm averaging about 200 FPS on low settings. I'd also appreciate some clarification on the differences between PCIe 4.0 and 5.0 concerning the 50 series cards. Thanks!

The whole PCIe 4.0 vs 5.0 thing won't affect your performance at all, so no need to stress about that. If you really want higher FPS, you could consider upgrading to an 5800X3D or a 9800X3D, but the boost you'll get from the 5080 will likely be worth it. It should help you achieve that 1440p at 240Hz you're aiming for!

With a Ryzen 9 5950X, you shouldn't worry about bottlenecks too much! Upgrading to the 5080 should work out just fine for you.

Just keep in mind that high FPS gaming often leans on the CPU side of things. You could probably crank your graphics settings up without a huge FPS penalty. And honestly, higher FPS feels nice, but when you play without the FPS counter, the difference isn't that noticeable. Another option is upgrading to 4K—sure, you might lose FPS, but the visuals will be stunning and the CPU won’t hold you back as much. If it were me, I might hold off on the upgrades since your current setup is still quite capable! Maybe a sweet 1440p OLED would be a great addition instead.

It's hard to say exactly how much of a performance increase you'd get, but you can test it by running the game at a lower resolution with all settings on low. If you see a big FPS boost, that's a good indicator of what you might gain with the 5080. But if your FPS doesn't change much, it means your CPU might be limiting you, which could mean the GPU upgrade won't help as much as you'd like. Personally, I'd suggest looking into a 5070 Ti instead along with a used 5700X3D for better value.

Honestly, the 5080 seems overpriced for your setup unless you're diving into 1440p ultra-wide or 4K gaming. The 5070 Ti offers better value, and if you have PCIe 4.0, you should be all good for performance. Just be aware that you might be facing a CPU limitation, making the GPU upgrade less effective.
