Is Upgrading from Ryzen 7 3700X to 5000 Series Worth It?

I'm looking to upgrade my PC to take full advantage of my new 1440p 240Hz monitors. I've already ordered an AMD RX 9070 XT to replace my RTX 2070, but I'm considering whether to also upgrade from my Ryzen 7 3700X. I've seen that the Ryzen 5000 series is available, with the 5800 XT priced at $183 and a used 5800X3D for around $350. Given the performance improvements, will switching to the 5800 XT be a notable boost, or should I invest in the pricier 5800X3D? Or do you think I can stick with my 3700X for now? My goal is to consistently hit 144 FPS or higher in games like Call of Duty, Battlefield, and Apex Legends.

Considering your setup with the RX 9070 XT and high-refresh monitors, I'd suggest not going for the 5800 XT. It's only marginally better than a 5600 with some tweaks. You'll likely hit a CPU bottleneck if your processor isn't strong enough, especially during intense gaming.

Have you checked for the 5700X3D? It might be the best choice since it'll probably last you longer than the others. The 5800 XT is decent, but at around $200, the X3D could be a better investment for you. If the 5800X3D was closer to $100, I'd say grab it without hesitation!

Upgrading to the 5800 XT would provide about a 15% increase in performance over your 3700X. But if you go for the 5800X3D, you're looking at a boost of about 50%. So, if you want to push those frames higher, the X3D might be the better bet for future-proofing your system.

In my experience, the bottlenecking with the 5800 XT mainly occurs at lower resolutions like 1080p. If you’re mainly gaming at 1440p, the extra cost of the 5800X3D for that 35% performance increase could be justified. It really depends on your budget and needs.

Intel's newer CPUs like the i5-12600KF are also a viable option if you’re considering a motherboard switch. They're competitive in price and performance compared to Ryzen 5000. There are solid builds available if you want to compare.
