I'm new to programming and currently enrolled in an introductory class for Python. So far, I've worked on several projects during the semester, and I'm wondering if I can include them in my portfolio, or should I focus on building my own projects outside of school? Also, do programmers typically use multiple languages?

A portfolio is all about showcasing quality work. Use GitHub to create a repository with your projects, showing your thought process and the problems you aimed to solve. As you get better, add new projects and feel free to remove older ones to reflect your growth. And yes, most programmers work with multiple languages depending on their needs and preferences!
It's totally fine to add your school projects as long as they're not overly basic. Just remember, portfolios should ideally reflect your individual contributions and understanding. And yes, gaining proficiency in multiple languages is quite common among developers as it allows them to tackle a wider range of problems.
Absolutely include both school projects and personal ones in your portfolio! School projects show that you're learning and committed, while personal projects demonstrate initiative and passion. It’s a great way to show potential employers that you're actively applying what you’ve learned and growing your skills.
Incorporate your school projects, especially if they're more substantial, like final assignments or personal projects. However, avoid cluttering your portfolio with simple assignments that don't show much effort. It's also true that programmers often learn and use multiple languages throughout their careers.
You can definitely include your school work, but make sure you present it well. Polish your code, write a brief README for each project explaining what it does and what you learned. Intro projects can still highlight your understanding of fundamental concepts like problem-solving and data structures, so don’t shy away from them.
