How Do I Transfer Steam Game Save Files from Windows to Linux?

I'm preparing to transfer all my files onto a thumb drive that I plan to use with Linux, mainly for CADCAM and 3D files. However, I want to make sure to include my save file from Palworld and other games as well. My question is: how does Linux handle game saves for Steam games? Are they stored in a similar way to how they're organized in the AppData folder on Windows? If not, how exactly do I go about transferring them without losing my progress? My family and I have invested a lot of time into these games, and I'd rather not start from scratch.

Generally speaking, yeah! If you check the local files option in Steam, you should find your game files pretty similar to Windows. Just be sure you're looking in the right folders.

Remember, Linux just provides a filesystem; how games save varies. Typically, they'll be in a hidden folder called .steam in your home directory. Just ensure that your thumb drive's file system is compatible with both Windows and Linux, like NTFS, to avoid any issues. Steam also backs up save files via Cloud, which helps a lot if you don't manually copy these.

Got it! Hopefully, everything just syncs up nicely with Steam Cloud and I can get my files where they need to be!

I haven't played Palworld specifically, but when I moved save files from Windows to Linux in other games, it just comes down to finding the correct folder. It might take a little digging depending on the game, but it usually works out. Just keep searching!

Check this out: https://www.pcgamingwiki.com/wiki/Palworld. It highlights where your save files are located. Also, to automate backups, you can use tools like Ludusavi from GitHub. They can really ease saving across platforms.

It's a bit tricky. If you're using Proton for Windows games, save files are usually in the Wine/Proton Prefix, which acts like a mini-Windows environment. For native Linux games, they might turn up in your ~/.config directory. To make it easier, you can log in to Steam and check your Steam Cloud storage to see where everything is saved.
