Water Spilled on My PC—What Should I Do?

I accidentally spilled water from a nearly full 5-inch water bottle onto my Lenovo PC because the desk wasn't properly secured. The spill hit the top of the PC where there are some holes. After it happened, my monitor displayed a white screen with some rainbow-colored boxes. I quickly unplugged everything connected to the PC and tried to dry it with air for about a minute before my brother advised against it. The PC didn't show any signs of smoke or strange smells, and the top felt cold rather than wet. Since it's been only an hour since the spill, I'm unsure how much water actually got inside. Is it safe to turn on the PC if it dries, or should I open it up to make sure it's all dry? I don't have a fan to aid in drying. Also, if it's damaged, can I still recover my data if I buy a new computer?

I’m not an expert, but I’d be concerned about the water damages. Maybe check with a tech person if you can! To be honest, I’d let an AI like ChatGPT weigh in, too, but remember that it isn't a guarantee everything will be okay.

I asked an AI and it suggested drying might work, but I’m still worried about those screen issues.

First things first, make sure it’s completely dry before you attempt to power it back up. I’d recommend opening up the case and letting it air out for a couple of days, just to be safe. Even a tiny drop in the wrong spot can cause serious issues! If you're worried about the power supply, avoid opening that, as it can be dangerous. It's a bit of a waiting game at this point, and you might be lucky, but you won't know until you try to power it back up later.

Is it safe to leave it as is until I can get the right tools tomorrow?

Look, drying it out is crucial, but you're probably going to kick yourself for putting a drink so close to your PC. Seriously, let it dry and give it some time. It's a risk if the internals got wet. You might find that not all components are wrecked, but you won’t know till later. Fingers crossed!

I totally messed up this time. What was I even thinking?

Honestly, it might already be short-circuited. That monitor behavior isn’t promising. Just let it dry for a few days and hope for the best, but be ready for the possibility that something may have fried.

It sounds like there might be some damage since your monitor got weird. I’d recommend waiting a bit and letting it dry before taking any further action. If you decide to open it up, do that carefully to avoid any additional damage. If it’s toast, you’ll likely still be able to transfer your files to a new computer. Just make sure to back up anything you can retrieve.
