Advice for a First-Time SysAdmin Starting Tomorrow

I'm starting my first day as a SysAdmin at a company I've been with for a while, and though I have some experience in service desk roles, I'll admit I'm still pretty much a beginner in this new position. I'm looking for tips on how to make the most of this opportunity. What should I focus on, what might not be as important right now, and are there specific skills or certifications I should aim to acquire? I'm also curious about how to advance my career quickly, especially since my ultimate goal is to transition into Cyber Security or Systems Engineering. Any early career advice would be greatly appreciated!

Talk to your new team and manager to find out what's most important for you to start focusing on. Ask them what they'd wish they knew on their first days. Keeping a journal to document what you learn is super helpful too! Just remember, everyone was new at some point, so don't hesitate to ask questions when you're unsure.

Definitely! Imposter syndrome is real, and many have felt the same. Mistakes will happen; just learn from them and maybe even keep a list of them. It helps when you reflect later!
