I'm looking to sell my old external hard drive that I used for Xbox games, and I want to ensure that all my data is completely wiped so the new owner can't recover anything. I'm not familiar with the process of securely wiping a drive. Any tips or methods you could share would be super helpful! Thanks!

For just Xbox game storage, the risk of important data recovery is low. If you can only use your Xbox, a quick format will work, but it won't make data unrecoverable. If you’ve access to a PC, you could use File Shredder for a quick format followed by a free space wipe for extra security.

If you're serious about securely wiping data, I recommend using a tool like Eraser. It has options that meet government standards for data destruction, although they can be time-consuming. Another quick method is using EaseUS Bitwiper for a single-pass wipe. Even just formatting it through Windows Explorer with the 'quick format' option unchecked will do the trick.

To wipe your external drive, head to Settings > System > Storage Devices on your Xbox, select your drive, and choose to format it as a game drive. This should clear out your data.

The Xbox doesn’t really offer a full secure wipe option, so while you can format the drive, be aware that recovery software might still access some files. If possible, connect the drive to a PC or Mac and use their format options for a more thorough wipe.
