I recently upgraded my processor from a Ryzen 3700X to a Ryzen 5900XT, and now I'm facing some serious issues. Whenever I start any game, my system crashes hard and requires a power cycle to fix. Initially, I thought it might be a power supply problem, so I replaced my old PSU with a 1000 watt one, but the issue persists.
Here's my build for context:
- Motherboard: MSI B450 Tomahawk with the latest BIOS
- RAM: 32GB G.Skill TridentZ in slots 1 & 3
- GPU: Sapphire Pulse 7900XTX
- HDD: Western Digital 1TB M.2
- PSU: Corsair RM1000E (1000 watt)
To diagnose, I've:
- Reset the BIOS and defaulted all overclocking settings
- Reseated all hardware
- Reinstalled my old 750W PSU
- Reverted to the 3700X, which worked fine
- Tried running FurMark and other benchmarks without issues
- Adjusted RAM frequencies and reinstalled chipset drivers
However, as soon as I try to play a game past the splash screen, I get a black screen, and only the CPU debug light is active. At this point, I'm considering a fresh OS install, swapping to a B550 motherboard for potential power delivery issues, or possibly that the new CPU is faulty. I've reached out to AMD for help, but I'm looking for any suggestions on what else to try.

I had similar issues when I upgraded my CPU in the past. It’s worth checking the seating of your CPU cooler as well, just in case it’s overheating. Also, have you tried running Cinebench? Testing with that could give you more insight into stability. And yeah, definitely keep an eye out for any unusual signs in the BIOS when you reboot after those crashes. Hope you figure it out soon!
It sounds like you've done a lot of troubleshooting already! Since you can run stress tests without any issues, a fresh OS install might help clear out any potential conflicts. As for the CPU, while it’s rare, it is possible to get a defective unit right out of the box. If the OS install doesn’t work, you might want to consider swapping the motherboard too. Good luck!
