Why Am I Getting Low FPS with My New Monitor?

I recently upgraded to an LG 27" UltraGear QHD 2560x1440 240Hz monitor from an AOC 1920x1080 60Hz. Since the upgrade, I've noticed that my frame rates have dropped significantly in games that used to run smoothly on high settings, and I'm even getting below 60 fps in some less graphically intense games. I'm considering some adjustments like tweaking NVIDIA settings or lowering the refresh rate on the monitor. I can build a PC, but I'm not very experienced with troubleshooting or advanced settings like overclocking. Any advice would be appreciated!

Yes, rendering more pixels will slow down your frame rates. A quick test you can run is to change your monitor's resolution back to 1920x1080. If your FPS goes back to what it used to be, then you’ve pinpointed the issue.

Going from 1920x1080 to 2560x1440 means your GPU is working harder since that’s nearly 77% more pixels for it to render. This can definitely result in lower frame rates. You might not need to troubleshoot yet; try running 3D Mark to see how your system performs against others with similar specs. Also, capping the refresh rate from 240Hz won’t change much if you have G-Sync on because it adjusts dynamically anyway.

You're definitely rendering almost double the pixels now, which explains the FPS drop. If performance is still a worry, you could consider a CPU upgrade. The Ryzen 2700x can hold you back in modern games. A Ryzen 5600 or 5700x sounds like a solid upgrade, just check if your motherboard supports them with a BIOS update.
