What Should I Do After Downloading Malware on My Work Laptop?

I need some advice after a bit of a mishap. I was using my work laptop at home on my personal network and decided to download a torrent file. I've done this before without any issues. However, shortly after the download, I found myself locked out of my college accounts, including my email and Teams. I contacted the IT help desk, and they informed me that they detected a torrent file with malware, which triggered the security system at work. They've asked me to return my laptop tomorrow for them to check for threats. How serious is this situation? Should I try to deny it or just come clean and face the consequences? Just so you know, the file was a regular movie, not adult content. I'd appreciate any insights!

Honestly, trying to deny it will probably make things worse for you. Just be straightforward when they ask about it. They might give you some warnings, but it’s all about how you handle it. You could use this as a learning opportunity to be more cautious in the future.

You can't really hide it—they've already flagged your activity because it triggered their security protocols. It's best to just be honest about what happened. As for the consequences, it really depends on your workplace's policies. You might just get a warning or some advice on safe browsing practices. It could be worse, but owning up to it shows responsibility.

Thanks for the insight! I thought I might be in bigger trouble. I'll just explain what happened tomorrow.
