Help! My Drive Disappeared After a Windows 11 Update While Gaming

I was playing Forza on my PC and forgot to turn off automatic updates. I stepped away for a bit and when I came back, I found my system was rebooting to install updates. Now, the entire 1TB M.2 drive that had my game on it seems to have vanished. It shows up in Device Manager, but when I managed to get it displayed in File Explorer, it only shows up as 256GB. I've tried formatting it, but that hasn't resolved the issue. I'm not very tech-savvy, so I would appreciate some simple advice. Am I totally out of luck with this Samsung M.2 drive that's less than a year old?

This sounds like a known issue with the August Windows update affecting certain drives. You're definitely having some bad luck here. I had a friend who faced a similar problem and we ended up reinstalling Windows to fix it. You might want to check out some troubleshooting info online about this bug. Uninstalling the updates and updating your drive's firmware could help a lot! Yeah, I figured it out! I managed to recover it, but I had to format the drive. It’s super frustrating, and I just hope it doesn’t happen again.

If your drive shows as 256GB in the partition manager too, it might be toast. I'd seriously consider filing a warranty claim. Sometimes these updates can really mess things up.

I managed to get mine back! It seems like one of those infamous SSD issues. I'm not thrilled about having to format it, but luckily, I didn’t lose any critical files since it was just for gaming. Windows really knows how to complicate things, huh?
