Hey everyone! I currently have an RTX 2070 that I'm thinking of upgrading. I've got a few AMD options in mind like the RX 6900 XT, RX 7800 XT, RX 9060 XT, maybe even the RX 7900 XT or RX 9070. However, some of these are pushing my budget, which is ideally around £500 since I'm based in the UK. I'm curious if I should also look into NVIDIA cards, even though I find them a bit overpriced and with less VRAM. I don't play too many games but I do have a 1440p display at 60Hz, and I'm planning to get a 120Hz one soon. Currently, I'm only getting around 40-50 FPS in games like RDR2 and Metro Exodus, while BeamNG Drive tends to range from 15 to 40 FPS, mostly due to being CPU bound. Here's my current setup:
- i9 9900K
- MSI MAG Z390 TOMAHAWK
- 64GB of 3000MHz Corsair RAM
- Gigabyte RTX 2070 WINDFORCE 2X
- 750W Corsair PSU
This was my first PC build back in mid-2020, and I realize I might have made different choices, like opting for a 3rd gen Ryzen and a GTX 1080 Ti. I'm currently leaning towards the RX 7800 XT but would love some advice before making a purchase. Also, I've considered looking for used GPUs from CEX due to their 5-year warranty, but I've heard mixed reviews. Should I just buy new? Any help would be appreciated!

The RTX 5070 is a great card for 1440p, but it can be a bit pricey at the moment. The RX 9070 is really competitive and usually goes for under £500, plus it offers excellent performance.
I upgraded from a 2070 Super to an RX 9060 XT, and it's been fantastic for 1440p gaming. I got it for a great price during a sale, too. Should last me a good while.
If ray tracing is important to you, go for the RTX 5070. If not, the RX 9070 is a solid choice too. I’ve seen the Acer Nitro 9070 for around £499, which isn't too high above your budget.
Thanks! I’m leaning towards the 9070 now since it’s not a huge jump in price from the 7800 XT.
You might want to check out the XFX Swift 9070 XT. It’s a bit over budget at £550, but it’s well worth the investment for future-proofing your setup.
I looked at the ASUS PRIME RX 9070 XT OC, but it has three PCIe 8-pin power connectors and I’m unsure if my PSU can handle that. The XFX only needs two, but they recommend an 800W PSU.
If you can stretch your budget a bit, the RX 9070 XT is a great buy. It’s outperforming a lot of GPUs in its price range and will serve you well for a long time.
Definitely consider the RX 9070. It performs better than the 5070 and is available for under £500 right now. Plus, AMD cards generally have lower CPU overhead, which is a plus for your current setup.
What’s the difference in performance between OC and non-OC models? I was eyeing a more expensive Acer Nitro OC RX 9070.
You could always sell your RTX 2070 and put that money toward an RX 9060 XT 16GB, it might just be what you need for now.

I checked, and the current UK pricing shows the RTX 5070 being more expensive and not as good performance-wise.
