I have a 2017 iMac running macOS Ventura, and I just realized that it won't be getting any more updates since support ended in September. Does this mean the iMac is completely useless now? Is it unsafe to use on the internet, making it just another piece of e-waste? I really like the computer and it's still fast for my needs, but I'm concerned about security. Can I use a recent version of Chrome or Firefox to keep it safe for a few more years?

Don't throw it away just yet! You can still use your iMac by upgrading to a newer version of macOS with OpenCore Legacy Patcher (OCLP). If you're thinking of retiring it, consider a conversion kit to turn it into a cool 5K monitor for another computer! Plus, OCLP is working great for my own 2017 model, even though it's a bit technical to set up.
My grandma still runs a 2009 iMac without issues! Just make sure to have an up-to-date browser—typically not Safari—and you should have no problems for everyday tasks.
Apple's security updates mainly target serious threats that affect businesses or high-profile individuals, so the average person is less likely to face those types of risks. Just be careful with downloads, and maybe get some antivirus software. If you switch to another browser, it’ll likely continue getting updates for a few years, making your iMac perfectly usable for some time!
You can absolutely keep using it! Just because it won't run the newest OS doesn't mean you can't enjoy it. My last iMac lasted 8 or 9 years without a hitch. That’s pretty impressive for computer hardware!
Chill out! If it still works, just keep using it! Eventually, your browser might stop working properly, but until then, it's completely fine to surf the web. And it's impressive that your iMac has lasted nearly a decade!
