I received a fiber modem from Kinetic and have never rented equipment from an internet service provider (ISP) before. The cable from the wall connects to the PON port on the modem. I'm looking to return or replace the modem they've rented to me. What options do I have?

What you can do depends on your ISP's policy. Some might allow you to use your own router through features like DMZ hosting, where they assign a public IP to your own hardware. It’s best to check with Kinetic to see if there's a possibility of using your own gear. If they allow it, just buy a compatible device and get in touch with them to link it to your account.
Unfortunately, when dealing with fiber optics, the equipment provided by your ISP is usually required. Unlike cable or DSL, you can't just plug in any modem, as ISPs won't activate random devices on their network due to potential issues they could cause. It's a bit of a hassle, I know.
This is definitely the case; it’s not as straightforward with fiber.
Just so you know, fiber doesn’t actually use traditional modems. It uses a device that converts light signals into electrical signals, which is different from the modulating and demodulating process used in copper lines. But everyone understands when you mention a 'modem'!

Booo! That’s frustrating! *throws tomatoes
