Why Can’t I Set Up RAID with My SATA Drives on the MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk?

Hey everyone! I'm trying to set up a RAID configuration on my new MSI MAG B850 Tomahawk WiFi Max motherboard, but I'm having some trouble. On my previous MSI B550 Gaming WiFi, I was able to create a RAID array with SATA drives, but now I can only see the NVMe drives when I try to set it up. I might have overlooked something in the manual or settings, so I wanted to reach out for some confirmation before I change my plans!

It looks like your motherboard might not support RAID for SATA drives at all. Check the manual again for any supported configurations. I think it’s only able to handle RAID with NVMe drives unless you use a separate PCIe RAID SATA card.

The manual just mentions support for RAID 0, RAID 1, and RAID 10 for M.2 NVMe drives. I'm surprised they restrict RAID to NVMe only, since SATA drives can offer a lot of advantages too.

I found it odd too. You should have an option in BIOS for SATA RAID, but if your SATA drives don't appear in the RAID utility, that’s a problem. Make sure to install the RAID drivers during Windows installation, as that's sometimes necessary. Check the setup guide on page 31 of the manual for details!

Yeah, I checked and there is a RAID option in BIOS, but it's not helping if the SATA drives can't be seen. That’s frustrating!

From what I gathered, the manual specifies RAID support is strictly for NVMe drives. It's a bit weird they even have the RAID vs. AHCI option for SATA if they don't support it in RAID mode.
