Advice for a New SysAdmin Managing an Old System

Hey folks! I recently secured a position as an IT Specialist, which is essentially a SysAdmin role, at a local company, and I'm really excited about it. It's a huge win since I'm also close to finishing my Bachelor's in Computer Science. The catch? I'm the sole IT person here, aside from some remote team members from the parent company. The tech environment is pretty outdated, with a lot relying on Microsoft Access, Infor FourthShift, and a ton of Excel. The systems we have are older than I am and most procedures involve printing reports just to scan them back into the system before shredding the paper! I'm the third IT administrator in this position, following two previous admins. The first worked for decades and built everything without much updating, while the second was less effective, using AI to change things, which broke a lot of our setups. We did manage to migrate to Windows 11 recently, so at least the user and server machines are somewhat modern now. I'm looking for advice on what I should focus on to improve our systems and processes, as my suggestions are being taken seriously here. Any Tips?

First off, get ready to run! Haha, just kidding! But seriously, a solid option would be to convince management to approve a budget. If they’re not willing to modernize, it might not be worth sticking around long-term. You want to learn, after all!

What would you suggest for modernization? I think FourthShift and Access need a major upgrade. I’ve heard about SAP being a future goal, maybe with Power BI integration.
