What CPU should I consider when upgrading from a Ryzen 5 3600X to a 5070 Ti?

I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 3600X and planning to upgrade my old 3060 to a new 5070 Ti. I have 32GB of 3200MHz RAM, but moving to something like the newer AM5 Ryzen CPUs means I'll also need to buy new RAM, and I really don't want to spend $600 on that. I'm contemplating either sticking with my current setup and getting a 5600X or switching to a new motherboard for a 14th Gen Intel chip, which still supports DDR4. Will either of these options be good for 1440p gaming with the 5070 Ti?

All options like the 5600X, 5800X, or even the 5800XT are great. There's really no need to switch to Intel when you can upgrade within the 5000 series. At higher resolutions like 1440p, the CPU becomes less critical, but upgrading from the 3600 is a good call at this point.

I wouldn't recommend switching to Intel and a new motherboard since those CPUs are priced high and AMD tends to perform better overall. You might want to look at getting a 5700X3D and waiting for RAM prices to drop before upgrading to AM5.

Consider going for a Ryzen 7 5800X. It’s around the same price as the 5600X but offers better performance. I’ve got a similar setup with a 5800X, 32GB of 3200 DDR4, and I swapped from the 5600X—my games are running much smoother now. Keep in mind, prices can vary based on where you live, so check that out. Plus, many upcoming games require Ryzen 7 or Intel i7 as minimum specs, which increases future-proofing.

Just keep in mind that the 5800X runs at 105W, whereas the 5700X is 65W. It’s not an issue if you're cool with an eco mode, but make sure your cooler can handle the 105W.

You could also consider the 14600K plus a new motherboard or, if you're lucky, track down a used 5700X3D or 5800X3D at a decent price.

There are plenty of AM4 upgrades available that won’t cost too much. Going for a used X3D processor could be a smart move!

If you're looking for solid 1440p performance without breaking the bank and want to avoid spending too much on RAM, just grab a 5600X. You could sell or trade your 3600X to help with the costs. It's an easy upgrade and will let your 5070 Ti really shine in most games.

The 5600X is definitely a solid option. Just make sure to update your BIOS before swapping CPUs, and either grab some new thermal paste or consider getting a new cooler if you can.
