How to Record Discord Audio While Muting It for Myself on Zorin OS?

I'm a student using Zorin OS (Wayland), and I'm facing a challenge during online classes on Discord or Google Meet. I need to record these sessions (capturing both the window and audio) for later review, while also working on other tasks, like coding in IntelliJ, researching in Brave, or watching videos in VLC. The tricky part is that I want to hear only my work (the audio from Brave/VLC) and not the live class audio while recording.

Whenever I try to use GPU Screen Recorder (Flatpak) with Discord's audio, muting Discord for my ears results in no audio being recorded at all. There's no way to separate the audio stream:
- If I mute Discord in-app, the recording captures no audio.
- If I mute it via the system tray, it still records nothing.
- Lowering the volume of Discord also lowers it in the recording.

Essentially, I want to hear my tasks while still capturing the Discord audio for the final recording. Currently, I can record Discord's video and audio, but I hear all the class chatter, which distracts me from my other tasks. I'm looking for a way to achieve the separation I need!

Honestly, if you can record the class on a separate device, like your phone, that might save you a lot of hassle. It keeps your PC free for other tasks, and you don’t have to deal with audio management. Just a thought because sometimes simple solutions are the best!

It sounds like a tricky situation! I totally get wanting to focus on your work without all that chatter. Have you tried using OBS? It’s great for managing audio streams independently. You can set it up so that only Discord's audio goes into the recording, while you mute it on your end. It might seem a bit complex if you're new to it, but there are plenty of tutorials out there that can guide you through the setup. This way, you can record what you need without having to listen to it yourself.

Yeah, OBS can be overwhelming at first, but once you get the hang of it, it's super flexible! Take your time learning it; it might be just what you need to solve the audio issue.
