Can I Use a KVM to Switch Between HDMI and DisplayPort Setup?

I'm trying to set up a KVM switch for my two PCs: one is a gaming PC with DisplayPort output, and the other is a mini PC with HDMI output. I want to seamlessly switch my monitor and peripherals using a single monitor that supports both HDMI and DisplayPort. However, I've noticed that many KVMs that support both types of connections often don't allow for mixing HDMI and DP signals. Is it feasible to achieve this configuration with a KVM switch that's budget-friendly, ideally under $100?

Most budget KVM switches won't mix HDMI and DisplayPort signals; they typically only switch between them. The simplest solution for under $100 is to connect each PC directly to the monitor using the corresponding ports (one via DP and the other via HDMI), and use a separate USB switch for your keyboard and mouse. You might find some active DP to HDMI converters, but they can be unreliable for gaming and often push the price beyond your budget.

Thanks for the advice! I think I’ll try the direct connection method with a USB switch.

DisplayPort can output an HDMI signal! You just need a DP to HDMI cable or a dongle, and then you can use an HDMI KVM switch. I’m currently using that setup in my office, and it works great!

Just a heads up, not all DP ports can output HDMI; look for a DP++ marking to be sure. Some devices might need a more expensive active converter.

I’ve actually used a cable that connects HDMI on one end and DisplayPort on the other. This way, you only need HDMI at the monitor end, making it easier to manage.

It sounds like converters might be necessary for your setup. Just be sure to choose reliable products to avoid issues!
