Help! My iPad Thinks It’s Owned by a University

I recently got an iPad as a Christmas gift, but it keeps saying that it's owned by a university. The problem is, I don't attend this university, and the person who gave it to me bought it from a regular store, not through any university. I'm really puzzled as to why it's saying this! When I contacted Apple for help, they couldn't figure it out either. I suspect it might be linked to an application I made for college using my Apple ID, but I'm not even in their system as a student! So why is it connected to them? Is there a way to remove this, or do I need to contact the college directly? Also, can I delete my account myself? The iPad isn't functioning properly because of this issue, and it keeps prompting me to get approval to download apps, which is super frustrating.

You’ve got yourself an 'Apple Facebook machine'! Just kidding—though I get it, drawing on a phone isn't nearly as comfortable!

lol but also I’m a digital artist and drawing on the phone is torture!

Just to let you know, if the device is stuck in management, the only way to clear it is through the responsible institution. They should be able to confirm that it's not stolen and potentially remove that lock.

It sounds like you may have received a used iPad that was either stolen or previously assigned to someone at the university, and the IT department didn’t remove it from their system. This can happen sometimes when devices are reissued without proper reset.

It was brand new, completely unopened, packaging was perfectly sealed and everything.

You definitely need to reach out to the college. If they registered the device, they are the only ones who can remove it from their management system. Otherwise, you might end up with an iPad that can’t do much!

Alrighty! Thank you!

This seems like a Device Enrollment Program lock issue. The only way to remove it is through the university that originally registered the device. Make sure it wasn’t lost or stolen and contact them—they might be able to help you out.

Not that I’m aware of; the woman my family bought it from said she got it officially, just had wrong colors sent.
