Why Won’t My PC Shut Down Properly?

My PC occasionally runs perfectly, but sometimes it lags incredibly, even when no background processes are active. I usually try to restart it, but after it boots up, the fans spin and the LED lights flick on for about 10 seconds before it shuts down again. There's no error code or anything to diagnose the issue. I often have to wait a while—this has happened around 20 times, so I have my routine of walking away to eat or watch something. When I return, it starts working again without any problems. Can anyone explain what might be going on?

You might want to share your system specs here; sometimes the hardware configuration can lead to these issues. A good build won’t help if something isn't compatible or is failing. If a pro built it, they should have all that info. Just a thought!

I’m planning to post the specs the next time it turns on. It's built nicely, but I definitely didn’t put it together myself.

It sounds like it could be a power supply issue or possibly even a problem with your motherboard. Sometimes, random shutdowns like you describe can be linked to overheating or a failing PSU. Keep an eye on the event viewer when it works; it could show error codes that hint at what's wrong. Also, if you notice error codes when it starts up, that could give a clue, too!

Definitely check the power supply! If you can access the event viewer in Windows, that’ll help pinpoint the faults, especially kernel errors. Just be sure to look at your cooling as well.
