Why Are My Screens Turning Black While My PC Still Runs?

I've been experiencing a frustrating issue where my screens go black after about 30 seconds to a minute when either HDMI or DisplayPort is connected, but the PC itself seems to keep running. I'm using Windows 11 with a Gigabyte RTX 3060 Ti Gaming OC and an Intel i7 12700 processor on a B660m Aorus Pro DDR4 motherboard. This problem started just two days ago after my friend updated his drivers through the NVIDIA app, and now we're both having issues with our identical prebuilt setups. I tried using different connectors on my VGA cable, which worked for me before, but it didn't help him at all. I've also performed several troubleshooting steps: tried different HDMI and DP cords, removed and reinstalled drivers with DDU and Nvcleanstall, reseated my VGA cables and GPU, and updated the BIOS. I'm starting to suspect it's a PSU issue, and I'm planning to buy a new one. But before I do, I wanted to see if anyone has any insight into what might be causing this problem?

Just a heads up, if you’ve updated the BIOS, make sure to check if there are any specific settings related to power management or graphics output that might need adjusting. Sometimes, those updates change the way your hardware interacts with one another. Hang in there; you’ll get to the bottom of it!

It sounds like you've covered a lot of ground with your troubleshooting! Just to clarify, when you mention ‘VGA cables,’ do you mean the 8-pin PCIe power cables? Those can sometimes get confused with the term ‘VGA.’ If the screens are going black but the PC is still on, it might be related to power delivery issues, especially if your PSU is struggling. Keep an eye on those readings, and replacing the PSU might just solve the issue! Let us know how it goes when you get the new one.

I agree with the PSU suspicion! It could be that your existing one isn’t supplying enough power under load, especially since the fans ramp up to maximum speed. I’ve also seen issues like this arise from BIOS settings, so it might be worth resetting it to default and disabling any overclock profiles temporarily. That being said, definitely test with a new PSU when you can. Best of luck!
