What should I expect to be paid for working on Christmas Day due to an emergency?

Hey everyone! I recently received an emergency call and ended up working from noon on Christmas Day until 3 AM the following day to handle a ransomware issue as the sysadmin. There's no clear pay policy at my business regarding emergency situations like this. I'm curious to know what people think is a fair compensation, especially as I was balancing this with my family time during the holidays.

Honestly, I'd expect something sizable—thinking along the lines of $3k or so. You put in a serious shift and your family sacrificed time with you. If they don’t recognize that, it might be worth looking for a company that appreciates hard work more. Don’t sell yourself short!

I hear you, and while it's tough to predict what your management might decide, I'd say think about how your contract lays out overtime. If you're W2, you may only receive standard pay, but there’s a chance for some PTO or even a bonus during annual discussions if you raise this concern!

Good points! I will definitely check my contract and see how I can bring this up in a constructive way.

Honestly, double time pay is what I'd argue for if I were in your shoes. Missing a holiday is tough enough, and it should be recognized accordingly. Even if you're salaried, people should be compensated fairly for emergency situations!

If I were in your position, I'd seek at least double pay for those hours. It’s also important to advocate for better compensation policies for emergency work within your company moving forward. If they fail to compensate adequately, it might be time to reconsider your options.

Exactly! Fair compensation is crucial, especially in our line of work where emergencies can hit us at the worst times.

In my experience, companies should recognize the sacrifice of working on holidays. The least you could hope for is a solid holiday bonus or extra time off to make up for what you missed. It's all about how much they value the work you put in during those crucial hours!

Given the situation, I'd aim for triple time at least. You missed a holiday with your family, so asking for something substantial to compensate for that is totally reasonable. Plus, a little bonus to make up for the missed family time would be a nice touch!

I agree, especially if you can manage to take some time off in lieu too. It really helps to have that balance!
