I'm looking to upgrade my CPU and motherboard to improve my gaming experience. Currently, I have an Intel i3-7100 running at 3.9 GHz, paired with a GTX 1660 Super and 16GB of RAM. I mainly play games like Forza Horizon 5, Farming Simulator 22, Hearts of Iron 4, Crusader Kings 3, and Manor Lords. I'm also interested in playing newer titles, such as Forza Horizon 6 and Farming Simulator 25.
I'm considering the Ryzen 5 5500, as I can get it along with a motherboard for around 200-250€ where I live. Is this a good choice, or do you have any better recommendations? I'm curious if a stronger CPU will enhance performance enough to compensate for my older GPU. Also, how powerful does the CPU need to be before it bottlenecks the GTX 1660 Super?
As a parent, my gaming time is limited, and I don't foresee upgrading the GPU dramatically in the near future.

The Ryzen 5 5500 is a decent option, but you might want to consider the Ryzen 5 5600 or 5600X as they provide better performance—especially for the games you're planning to play. They’re a bit faster and will give you a longer-lasting setup.
In terms of graphics, since you mention you're mostly focused on VRAM for running games smoothly, it's worth noting you currently have 6GB with your 1660 Super. I recommend upgrading once the minimum for lower-end cards starts hitting 12GB, likely in the next gen or two. If you're into simulation games, they tend to be more CPU-heavy, so choosing something like the Ryzen 5 5600X would set you up nicely for years to come.

Thanks for the insight! I can actually get the 5600X with a B550 motherboard for around 290€. I'm considering it heavily now. If I wait for Black Friday with a budget of around 400€, would that change your recommendation? Should I still stick with the 5600X, or could I get something even better if I plan to grab a 12GB GPU in the next couple of years?
