I found a file on VirusTotal where all the antivirus scans flagged it as adware or PUP (potentially unwanted program). However, someone commented that it could be spyware or even a backdoor. I'm really trying to figure out what it actually is. How can I determine whether it's just adware or something more serious?

The problem with adware like OfferCore is that the risk depends on the types of offers you're seeing, which can vary in danger. Regardless, any adware is not something you want on your system, even if it's not overtly harmful. It's best to remove it as a precaution.
I had a similar experience when I downloaded VLC from Softonic. The installer included OfferCore and it only showed a false positive when I checked it on VirusTotal. Definitely keep an eye out for those installers!
