Why Are Docking Stations from Lenovo and HP So Problematic?

I work at a large telecom provider where our B2B customers rely heavily on docking stations, which is pretty standard for most companies. Our support teams frequently have to troubleshoot docking station issues, and it's a real hassle. They end up doing a hardware reset on laptops and docking stations, often having to disconnect power or press a reset button just to regain connections to multiple monitors or LAN. Is this level of frustration with docking stations normal, or are Lenovo and HP just having problems?

It mostly comes down to USB-C compatibility issues. Make sure your dock is Thunderbolt compatible (either version 3 or 4). Certain cables and power delivery specs can also lead to headaches. Plus, if you haven’t updated the Thunderbolt firmware from last year, it could be causing the charging problems. Don't forget that some models have quirks, like stopping connections due to energy efficiency issues. Overall, docks seem to be getting worse instead of better right now.

I can't speak for Lenovo, but with HP's Thunderbolt and USB-C docks, they generally work fine. That said, I did encounter an issue with a specific laptop-dock-display combo where nothing would connect unless I performed a power cycle on the laptop. It's a frustrating but not uncommon scenario.

Honestly, I’ve found that Dell’s docks aren’t any better. The design with USB-C can lead to a lot of issues. It's really a problematic connection choice for docking stations.

We've switched many customers over to refurbished HP G5 docks, and they've been happy with them! Most of the time, they work great in setups with dual monitors and wired LAN. The fact that we didn't even need to update the firmware for some of them just adds to the positive experience.

Definitely check for compatibility! Docks are notorious for being finicky, which is why some folks say they’re the new printers. They often have issues that make them seem more like a hassle than a help.
