I have a Dell 5437 laptop with a 4th gen i5 processor, Nvidia 740M GPU, 12 GB of RAM, and a 512 GB SSD. It previously ran Windows 10, but I switched to Pop!_OS 24.04 LTS, which claimed to support older GPUs. Unfortunately, I'm experiencing a drop in game performance, with FPS going from 60 down to around 30-40. I'm looking for a Linux distribution that could offer better performance and stability for gaming.

Make sure you're using the right drivers for your Nvidia card. The latest drivers that support your 740M are pretty old, around version 390. Distros like Ubuntu 22.04 and Arch Linux have these drivers available. Just avoid using Wayland, because the support for those old drivers is poor. Stick with X11 instead!

You might want to check out Linux Mint, especially the XFCE version. It's lightweight and well-suited for older hardware. Plus, it’s user-friendly, which means you should have a stable experience without too much hassle.

Could you break down what you mean by sticking with X11? I'm new to Linux and could use a step-by-step on that. Would love to understand better!
