As someone who's relatively new to Linux and mostly used it on laptops, I'm excited to try installing it on my main desktop for video and graphic editing, specifically with Kubuntu Studio Edition. I've got a Ryzen 7 2700 and I'm thinking about upgrading my current 1660 Ti to a 3070. However, I've heard that NVIDIA and Linux don't always get along well. Do any of you have experiences with the 3000 series? Is the driver installation straightforward, or would it be wiser to consider an AMD graphics card instead?

Just to add to the discussion, make sure to mention your Linux distro and hardware specs if you seek help. It really helps in troubleshooting. Also, I'd personally lean towards AMD GPUs for better compatibility and fewer headaches with drivers.
Depending on what you're playing, AMD might be the way to go, especially if you aren't gaming at 4K or need that super high-end performance. The AMD 7900 XTX and 7900 XT can’t fully compete with a 5090, but they can still hold their own in other scenarios. If CUDA isn’t important for you, it may not make a huge difference.
Here's the deal: you can expect around a 10-20% performance hit when using NVIDIA cards on Linux. If you're not reliant on NVIDIA features like CUDA, I'd definitely recommend going for an AMD card instead. They're making improvements, but you might find yourself waiting on those fixes for a bit.
