Advice for Installing Linux Mint on an Old Dell Optiplex

I just picked up a used Dell Optiplex 7040 with 8GB of RAM and a 256GB SSD. I know it's an older model, but it was cheap, and I plan to use it mainly for web browsing, online banking, and shopping. I'm leaning towards installing Linux Mint with the XFCE desktop environment since it's lightweight and seems manageable for someone new to Linux. Does anyone have tips or potential concerns I should consider before proceeding? I've read that Mint should work fine on this type of machine, but I want to ensure I don't end up breaking anything or with a system that's unusable. Thanks in advance!

If the Windows 10 installation isn't crucial for you, just go ahead and install Linux Mint. Your Optiplex has a 6th or 7th Gen Intel CPU, which is still decent. I've been running Linux Mint on older PCs without issues. Just remember, if you ever want to switch back to Windows, your activation key is usually linked to the system firmware, so you should be able to reactivate it later without problem. You might also consider a separate SSD for Linux, but if you're only using it for basic tasks, that's probably overkill.

The Ebay listing mentioned it has an i5-6500T and Windows 11 installed, which I doubt will run well on such an old machine. I'm not sure what you meant by "if the drive has anything I need"—I haven’t used it yet, so there’s nothing saved on it from my side. Thanks for clarifying!

You're on the right track with Mint XFCE. I've been using Zorin on a couple of older Optiplex models, and honestly, they handle it pretty well. Your machine should run Mint without any major hiccups.
