I'm currently using a Ryzen 5 5600 with an AM4 motherboard and I'm considering an upgrade. I'm curious about what options are available for a CPU upgrade without needing to buy a new motherboard. Are there any CPUs that would provide a significant performance boost compared to my 5600, or would I be better off just waiting until I can upgrade both the CPU and motherboard?

There aren’t many worthwhile options. You could go for an 8-core, but the performance boost in gaming might be minimal. If gaming’s your main focus, an X3D chip would be your best bet, but they're not cheap or easy to find right now. Avoid the non-X 5700 if you're considering upgrades.
Think about what you want from the upgrade. If it’s just for gaming, a solid upgrade path might not be necessary right now. If you can’t move to AM5 soon, the 5600 should still be good for now!
I’d hold on to your 5600 until you can invest in an entire AM5 upgrade. It still performs well today, and upgrading could get expensive fast. The prices for decent components are pretty steep right now.
Honestly, unless you can snag a Ryzen X3D chip, upgrading from the 5600 might not yield much in terms of performance. The 5600 is pretty solid for budget gaming. It's probably wiser to save your cash for an AM5 setup in the long run.
If you stick with the AM4 socket, one of the best upgrades you can look for is the Ryzen 7 5700X or 5800X. They can be pricey and hard to find, though. Just remember, stepping up to AM5 and DDR5 RAM is a big commitment, so you might want to save up for a full overhaul if that’s on your horizon.
