Can I use a regular DVD burner for Blu-ray discs?

I'm looking to burn some shows onto discs and want them in 1080p quality, so I thought about using Blu-ray discs. However, I'm unsure if my regular DVD burner will work for this. I've been searching for affordable Blu-ray burners but only find a few that are quite pricey. Should I consider downgrading to 720p or is it possible to use Blu-ray discs with my normal burner?

If you want 1080p quality, you can’t achieve that with standard DVDs since they’re limited to 480p or 576p video quality. You can convert a 1080p source to DVD format, but it won’t give you true 1080p. If you're okay with burning data as a digital file, you could go with an MKV format on a data DVD-ROM, but if you need it playable on a Blu-ray player, you'll have to get a Blu-ray burner and discs.

Honestly, you won’t be able to get 1080p on DVDs. Your best bet is to invest in a Blu-ray burner if you really want that quality.

Exactly! Blu-ray uses a blue laser, while DVD burners use a red laser, which is why they can't read or write Blu-ray discs. If you want to burn DVDs, stick with DVD writable discs.

Regular DVD burners can't handle Blu-ray discs at all. You'll need a specific Blu-ray drive to burn those. They require a different type of laser than what's in standard DVD burners.
