I have an old Toshiba NB200 that I really like because it has great battery life. However, Windows 7 runs very slowly on it, and I find it almost unusable. I'm wary of using Windows XP since it gets infected with viruses as soon as it's connected to the internet. I've never used Linux before, but I'm considering switching. Here are the specs: Atom N280 (1 core, 2 threads, 1.66 GHz), 1 GB DDR2 RAM (666 MHz), and GMA 950 graphics. I'm pretty tech-savvy in terms of hardware but know very little about using the terminal. Also, I bought a 2 GB RAM stick that works fine when the laptop is plugged in, but it causes crashes when it's not. Any thoughts on that? Thanks!

You might want to give antiX or Puppy Linux a shot. They're both lightweight distros that should run well on your setup and can help you revive that old laptop!
Honestly, I'd probably scrap that and just stick to using a tablet or phone! Upgrading that old machine might not be worth it. My similar device can only really handle basic tasks like opening folders.
