Should I Upgrade to a 1440p Monitor or Add More RAM First?

I'm currently running a Ryzen 5 8400F with an RX 6750XT, and I'm considering an upgrade. I was advised to first get a 1440p monitor before upgrading my GPU, but there's a catch: I only have one 32GB DDR5 RAM kit, which means I can't take advantage of dual channel performance. I'm coming from two 16GB CL45 5600MHz kits. Would it be better to invest in the 1440p monitor now, despite the single RAM module, or should I buy a second RAM module to get dual channel and stick with my 1080p setup for now? I usually play Battlefield 6, Red Dead Redemption 2, and Fortnite, and I'd really like some guidance!

Your rig is powerful enough to handle 1080p without a hitch, so the real bottleneck is your monitor. Upgrading to two RAM sticks will give you better low FPS performance, but it's not as crucial as getting a higher resolution display. Go for the monitor, and wait for the price of DDR5 to drop before upgrading RAM.

Okay, thanks! Do you have any monitor suggestions I should look into for that price range?

If your budget can stretch a little, check out the AOC Q27G3XMN; it's around $280 but usually offers great performance and value.

With DDR5, the performance gap between single channel and dual channel has narrowed a bit compared to older RAM types. It’s more acceptable, but if you check out that Ancient Gameplays video on YouTube, they show that dual channel gives about a 2.3% boost in FPS at 1440p. Still, getting a monitor is a great first step!

Wow, that’s interesting! I guess I’ll prioritize the monitor and upgrade the RAM later!

Dual channel RAM does provide better performance, but honestly, with your setup, you probably won't see a huge difference in everyday use. Plus, it sounds like your system is already a bit overqualified for 1080p gaming. Upgrading to a 1440p monitor will give you a much more noticeable upgrade in visual quality. Just go for the monitor first!

Sounds good! Any recommendations for a monitor within a $200-$250 budget?

Truthfully, resolution isn’t the only factor in image quality. You also need to consider color accuracy and brightness. If you're uncertain about jumping to 1440p, maybe try playing some games at 720p on your current monitor to see how much you value the resolution increase before fully committing.
