Need Help Migrating OneNote Files to Linux

Hey, everyone! I'm assisting my dad in moving from Windows 10 to ZorinOS LTS on his laptop since he wants to avoid buying a new machine for Windows 11. However, he has a large recipe collection stored in OneNote as .one files. I'm wondering if there's a Linux app that can replace OneNote or if there's a way to convert these .one files into a different format we can use. We thought about using the online version of OneNote, but it requires OneDrive, which he's not interested in. I'd really like to find a solution that saves us from the hassle of retyping everything manually, as that would take a lot of time. I tried using Okular, but it didn't work out. Any advice?

Hey! Just a quick reminder: when you’re posting about technical issues, it’s helpful to mention your Linux distro, any specs of the hardware, and any specific error messages you're encountering. Good luck with the migration!

OneNote can be a real headache! I suggest exporting each OneNote page to plain text files. From there, you can manually import them into Obsidian, which is a nice text-based alternative. Just a heads up, Obsidian on Linux tends to save files quite frequently, which could lead to increased wear on your SSD and might cause syncing issues if you use cloud services. But overall, this method can work well if you’re willing to do some initial setup.

I totally agree with the export-to-text method! It lets you keep the contents without having to rewrite them entirely. Just a note about Obsidian’s frequent autosave feature—you might want to check out how it interacts with your storage setup to avoid any unnecessary wear or syncing headaches! But getting your dad off Windows will definitely be worth it!
