Choosing the Right Linux Distribution and Desktop Environment

Hey everyone! I started my Linux journey with Fedora and really enjoyed it, but I've found GNOME to be a bit heavy on resources. I'm planning to set up a separate hard drive just for Linux and I'm torn between sticking with Fedora or trying a different distribution. I've also considered using Fedora with KDE Plasma for a lighter experience.

Most of my computer time is spent studying and writing LaTeX documents, but I do play games sometimes. I've thought about trying Arch based on some comments I've seen, but I'm concerned about its stability compared to Fedora. I'd love to hear any recommendations! If anyone has experience with using a separate hard drive for Linux, could you share any implications or things I should consider?

After giving KDE Plasma a shot, I can honestly say I won’t be returning to GNOME. It's much lighter and more user-friendly for people who prefer simplicity without sacrificing functionality.

If you're looking for something lighter, consider trying out desktop environments like XFCE or MATE. They're both pretty resource-friendly. About Arch, it is generally considered stable, but you might run into issues after updates. Fedora is likely to be a more stable choice overall, especially if you want to avoid maintenance hassle.

Thanks for the advice! I think I'll lean towards trying out those lighter environments before making a final decision.

Why not just install KDE on Fedora? It sounds like it could give you the best of both worlds. If you're curious, you can follow the official instructions to get started. I actually have multiple desktops installed on my Fedora setup, including GNOME, KDE Plasma, and even LXQt. I choose which one to use at login. Remember, while there are some complications like having a longer menu with multiple entries, it's generally not an issue if your machine has enough resources. Just keep in mind that you'll have more updates and file management to do, but the flexibility is worth it!

I totally get where you're coming from! Having multiple desktops is great, but it can be a bit chaotic with all the extra menu options. The trade-off is definitely worth it for the versatility.
