Why Does My PC Shut Down While Streaming?

I've been dealing with a frustrating issue for about a year now: my PC turns off unexpectedly while I'm streaming on Twitch. I mainly stream FFXIV and use screen capture. My setup has a lot of mods that are CPU-intensive. Recently, I replaced my power supply, thinking it was the culprit, but the problem returned even when I was not streaming. I've run stress tests without any shutdowns, but during gaming or streaming, it just powers off completely without warning. The CPU temps get pretty hot during some tests, reaching up to 95-97°C. I've also been using Discord for voice chat while streaming and haven't encountered issues there. I've checked the event logs after these shutdowns, but they only indicate an unexpected shutdown. Also, I've updated my GPU drivers and even reseated the GPU without success. Can anyone offer insights on what could be going wrong and how to test different theories?

It sounds like a pretty rough issue! A hard shutdown like that, without any blue screen of death, often points to a power problem or overheating. First, make sure your BIOS and chipset are up-to-date. Then, you can run hardware tests like Prime95 for the CPU, Memtest86 for your RAM, and FurMark for your GPU. Inspect the connectors on your CPU and GPU for any signs of damage, too. You might want to avoid reusing old cables as it can lead to shorts!

Great tips! If possible, try logging your CPU and GPU temperatures right before the shutdown to see if temperatures spike. It might also help to re-seat your heatsink and apply new thermal paste. With those high idle temps, your cooling might need some attention!

I agree with the overheating theory, especially since your CPU temps are quite high. It’s unusual for a 7700X to reach those temperatures during normal use or even while streaming. If your system only crashes while streaming, maybe the h.264 encoder you're using is putting too much load on your CPU. Trying to optimize your streaming settings might help reduce the load!

That makes sense! I’ll look into that and see if adjusting my streaming settings can help. Thank you!

From what you mentioned, it really does look like cooling or power could be the issues. A good idea would be to set up HWinfo to monitor your system's stats while you stream. If your CPU heats up too much under load, that could be the cause of the shutdowns. The 7700X shouldn't be running that hot normally, so re-evaluating your cooling setup might be necessary!
