I'm currently deciding between the 7800X3D and the 9800X3D to pair with my 5070 for gaming at 1080p. There's just a $100 price difference, so I want to know if the extra performance of the 9800X3D justifies that cost, or if I should stick with the 7800X3D instead. Any advice would be appreciated!

Honestly, the 7800X3D is a solid choice. Even at 1080p, if you haven't bought your 5070 yet, you might want to consider a 9070XT or even a 5070 Ti paired with a 9600X instead. It would likely outperform the 7800X3D with the 5070.
The 9800X3D might be overkill for a 5070. Only go for it if you plan on upgrading to a more powerful GPU later, like the 5090. Otherwise, I'd recommend sticking with the 7800X3D.
I'd go for the 7800X3D. With the money you save, think about upgrading the 5070 to a 5070 Ti. That might give you better overall performance without overspending on the CPU.
I just picked up the 7800X3D and am really satisfied. The 9800X3D didn't seem worth the extra cash for me either. It runs smoothly for all my games at 1080p!
Same here! I think the 7800X3D gives great performance without breaking the bank.
The 9800X3D does show about an 8% performance increase at 1080p when paired with a high-end GPU like an RTX 5090, but you probably wouldn't notice much difference with a 5070. If you're considering future upgrades, spending an extra $100 could be worth it for you, but just factor that into your decision.

That's true! But here, the Ti version is priced way higher, around $400 to $500 more, which makes the 5070 the only affordable option.
