I recently inherited my dad's old computer and it was running smoothly until today when my internet signal fluctuated from a strong 5 bars down to barely 2 or even 1 bar. I've tried troubleshooting steps like checking for driver updates, switching to the 5GHz WiFi settings, and restarting my PC alongside unplugging and re-plugging the WiFi adapter, but nothing seems to help. I'm unsure if the problem lies with the WiFi adapter or something else in the system. Any suggestions?

What model is your WiFi adapter? Knowing the chipset can help. Plus, which operating system are you running? Sometimes compatibility issues can cause these kinds of problems.
Have you checked if your WiFi speed has changed at all during this issue? Sometimes fluctuations can just be related to how many devices are connected or interference.
No, the signal is still at 2 bars despite everything I've tried.

It's a Realtek 8812BU Wireless LAN 802.11ac USB NIC.
