Should I Choose the 9800X3D or 7800X3D for Gaming?

I'm thinking about upgrading my PC and I'm stuck between two options. I'm planning to buy the CPU first, followed by the GPU in a month or so. I mainly game at 1080p to 1440p, focusing on competitive shooters like Apex, Fortnite, and Arc Raiders. Here are my options:

- **9800X3D paired with a 5060 Ti (8 GB)**: The 5060 Ti is overpriced right now, and I'm worried about supply in the future—a 16 GB version may not be available when I'm ready to buy.

- **7800X3D paired with a 5070**: The 7800X3D is priced at **$345** in my area, while the 9800X3D is **$480**. The 5070 costs about **$740**, and the 5060 Ti (8 GB) is around **$510**.

Given these options, which setup would provide better gaming performance?

I’d recommend going for the 7800X3D plus the 5070. It will offer a better gaming experience in most scenarios.

Thank you, that sounds great!

Just to give some context, my current setup is an R7 3700X with a 1660 Super. My motherboard just died, so I need an upgrade like you.

I’m in a similar boat. My ancient setup with a 4770K and RTX 2060 also died recently. I’m also considering the 7800X3D with a 5070; just need to sort out my RAM first!

Definitely the 7800X3D and 5070 combo for sure, no doubt about it.

I was leaning towards that too. Just wanted to make sure I wasn't overlooking the 9800X3D for long-term performance.

Going with the 7800X3D and 5070 is the best choice, no questions about it!

Thanks for the reassurance!

Have you thought about combining the 7800X3D with a 9070 XT?

Unfortunately, that's going for around $900 here, which is way too steep for my budget.
