I'm a system administrator in a purely Mac and cloud environment. Our finance team needs access to a specific standalone Windows application. Initially, I considered enabling them to use a virtual machine, but since this app connects to a Microsoft Access database for data retrieval and collaboration, I wasn't sure how to manage that. The Access database would need to be accessible via a network share. Now, I've shifted my approach to deploying Apache Guacamole and a Windows server in the cloud for Remote Desktop Services (RDS), but it feels a bit excessive since Windows Server is costly. I'm looking for more straightforward solutions that aren't overkill. Any suggestions? Thanks!

Have you thought about using RemoteApp? Windows 7 Ultimate had support for this before Microsoft discontinued it. It’s a shame they made that change, as it could have been a more cost-effective solution. You might want to explore alternatives that could perform similar tasks without being tied to a single platform.
Just check how many users need access. For deploying a single app, Horizon Published Apps are worth looking into. Microsoft has a similar option with AVD but I don’t have hands-on experience with that.
The best option would be to set up a Windows RDS environment. Sure, it’s pricey, but it works reliably. You'd get the access you need without too much hassle.
If your setup is cloud-only, consider using Azure Virtual Desktop (AVD). You can give them direct access to the server or utilize RemoteApp. There's no point in setting up your own RDS when you can use cloud solutions.
Honestly, I'd consider finding a different application altogether. But I get that sometimes you're stuck with what you've got! Supposedly, they really must use that app, huh?
