Should I Keep My VMware License or Switch to Another Platform?

My organization has seen VMware costs skyrocket from $3,000 to $21,000 this year for the same equipment and server count. I'm seriously considering not renewing my license, but I'm unsure about the risks of switching to another vendor or system. The price increases are frustrating, and I need to know what potential issues I might face if I let my license lapse and transition to something like Hyper-V or Proxmox instead. Help me figure this out!

Definitely look into the discussions around this. Some users had to switch to subscriptions and faced shocking quotes—like $104,000 for two years! We decided to move to Hyper-V after purchasing new servers. It's a hefty investment, but manageable compared to the bleak VMware future.

If you've recently switched to a subscription model, it's crucial to move before your current term ends, as staying past that could lead to compliance issues with Broadcom. Proxmox is my top recommendation unless you're primarily using Windows servers, then Hyper-V might suit you better!

Good point! I have a mixed setup, and Proxmox looks way more appealing as a flexible option for our needs.

The biggest risks if you don't update your license include losing access to VMware patches and legal harassment from Broadcom. Users have reported receiving cease and desist letters, so you'd want to have a transition plan in place early. You're likely better off moving to alternatives like Proxmox or Hyper-V where you won't have these headaches.

We've switched from VMware to Proxmox and haven't looked back. It might not be for everyone, but if your needs are simple, it's doable and cost-effective. There were some growing pains, but saved money is saved money!

Right? I’m also in the process of migrating to Proxmox, and honestly, I wouldn't go back even if they offered it for free!

At some point, the savings from switching could outweigh the migration costs. Proxmox and Hyper-V are good alternatives to consider. If you're facing such high yearly increases, it might be worth having a detailed discussion with your finance team to show how continuing with VMware could get unnecessarily expensive in the coming years. It's also worth noting that VMware has been known to send out legal threats to those who don't renew, which could add to the headache of trying to migrate later on.

Absolutely! Engaging your management with a solid move-off plan could help. Just be cautious about those legal threats; you'll want to keep everything above board.

We've had massive financial effects from these price rises. If I were in a smaller organization, I'd feel justified telling VMware to take a hike. Their focus seems more on bigger companies now, which leaves smaller organizations like yours at risk. I think you'd have to settle for aggressive migration, or else you’ll feel the pinch even more in the near future.

Exactly! We've also started migrating to Hyper-V and it's a smart choice considering how things are going with Broadcom. These prices are clearly aimed at bigger players.
