Can I Move Azure File Shares to OneDrive for Users?

I'm looking at a potential project where we have Azure file shares being used as personal drives for a set number of users. The goal is to transfer the files from these shares to individual users' OneDrive accounts, and then make those OneDrive locations accessible via their local file explorer. My initial thought was to use tools like Microsoft FastTrack, Migration Manager, or SPMT for this transfer. Is this approach reasonable, or am I missing something important?

In my case, I just told the users to copy everything they still needed over to their OneDrive. After a while, I removed their access to the file share but kept it around for a bit in case anyone needed a forgotten file.

I honestly prefer that method too! But I have a large user base, mostly older colleagues, so I feel it would create more admin work than it's worth.

I'm not too familiar with Azure file shares, but if you can set up one account with access to all user shares, that could work. You can use SPMT with a mapping file that links each share to the user's OneDrive. It even helps you analyze potential issues before you start. Just make sure to provision the OneDrive beforehand if necessary. Personally, I wouldn't bother with FastTrack—it doesn't seem as helpful.

That's a good idea! I'm currently testing my mapped drive to my OneDrive with SPMT, and it's going smoothly so far, thanks for the tip!

Interesting point! Why do you think FastTrack isn't worth it? I thought it could give a solid overview of the tasks.
