Why Am I Getting Half the FPS on My RTX 5080 and Ryzen 7 7800X3D Setup?

I recently built a gaming PC with some impressive specs: an RTX 5080 graphics card, AMD Ryzen 7 7800X3D processor, and 32GB of 6000MHz RAM, but I'm facing a frustrating issue. Although I've seen benchmarks of people getting high FPS in games with similar setups, my performance is far below expectations. I'm playing at 1920x1080 resolution on a 240Hz monitor and consistently getting only about half the expected frame rates across all games, even competitive ones like CS2 and Valorant. I've checked for BIOS and NVIDIA driver updates, and made sure that no settings are capping my FPS, yet nothing seems to work. A friend suggested it might be a Windows 11 problem. Any advice or possible fixes?

Have you verified that your CPU isn't running in eco mode or similar? Sometimes, BIOS settings can limit performance. Make sure both your CPU and GPU temperatures are within safe ranges too, as overheating can cause throttling, which might explain the low FPS.

ThermalExpert200 -

That's a good idea. I also had a CPU overheating issue that was causing performance drops.

Yeah, thermal throttling is sneaky; make sure your cooling is adequate!

Check your in-game graphics settings. Sometimes the settings can limit your frame rates inadvertently. If you haven't already, also look into your Windows display settings and ensure your monitor's refresh rate is set correctly there too. You might also want to run a benchmark just to see exactly what FPS you're getting at different settings.

Exactly! I had to mess with mine to get it right, and it made a huge difference.

Benchmarking really helps identify the bottlenecks, definitely try that!

You need to specify what frame rates you're currently getting and what you expected. This will help others provide better advice! Also, make sure you're plugged into the right PCIe slot for your GPU; sometimes installing it in the wrong slot can limit performance too.

Great point! Without those details, it's hard to diagnose the problem.

Exactly! Knowing the actual numbers can make troubleshooting much easier.

If everything seems fine hardware-wise, consider reinstalling your GPU drivers. Using a program like DDU to completely remove old drivers before reinstalling can help eliminate any lingering conflicts from previous builds. Also, ensure that you're installed on the correct M.2 slot; sharing lanes with the GPU can cause bottlenecks.

DriveDude909 -

Definitely! A clean driver install can fix a lot of weird issues.

SlotChecker99 -

Yes! Make sure to check your manual for optimal M.2 slots that won't bottleneck your GPU.

Make sure you're using the HDMI cable that supports at least HDMI 2.0, if not 2.1, to fully utilize your 240Hz monitor. Sometimes older cables can limit your FPS, especially at higher refresh rates. If you’re still seeing capped FPS after that, perhaps consider using a DisplayPort cable instead.

GamerDude93 -

Yeah, I had a similar issue with an old HDMI cable! Switching to DisplayPort fixed everything.

NerdyNerd10 -

Good point! Also, double-check your monitor settings to make sure it's set to the right refresh rate.
