Is Dual Booting Safe? Tips for Getting Started

Hey everyone! I've been getting into Linux lately and I'm considering a dual boot setup alongside Windows since I'm still more comfortable with Win11 for now. Recently, I tried to use my Logitech G25 wheel for sim racing, but Windows isn't supporting it anymore due to driver issues. I've tried workarounds, but it's been a hassle. I'm thinking that a dual boot with Linux might solve this problem since it could be more compatible. If I get a cheap SSD, wipe some data, and install Linux, I could keep using my wheel until it eventually fails. But I'm a bit worried about the safety of dual booting. Is it really safe to do this without risking data loss? Should I unplug the Linux SSD when I'm using Windows? Also, do sim racing games run well on Linux?

Yes, it's completely safe to dual boot! I have my setup with both Windows and Linux, and you won’t need to disconnect your drives when switching OSes. Just remember to disable any fast startup settings in Windows for best results!

From my experience, if you keep Windows on one drive and Linux on another, it should be perfectly safe. Just remember to back up your data, and install Windows first before going with Linux. That way, things will go smoothly with booting.

There are plenty of tutorials online to guide you through dual boot setup. I recommend keeping your important data backed up on an external drive just in case, but overall, it should be a smooth process!

Dual booting isn't hard; just follow a good tutorial. I’d suggest starting with user-friendly distros like Fedora or Linux Mint. You might want to try running Linux in a virtual machine first to see how everything works with your games and gear.

I have a dual-boot setup on separate drives for Ubuntu and Windows, and it works great! I've been using it for years without any data corruption. Just go for it; you should be just fine.

I tried dual booting like this, but I did have some issues when switching back to Windows. Just be careful!
