How can I access my late brother’s computer?

I'm in a really tough spot right now. My younger brother, who was only 17, sadly passed away, and I need help accessing his computer to look for information. He used a Windows 11 machine and we don't have a suicide note or anything that might give insights into his situation. We're located near Oklahoma City and I'm not tech-savvy at all. I'd appreciate any guidance, whether it's step-by-step instructions or resources. I loved him immensely and it's incredibly hard to cope with this loss without knowing what was going on in his life. Thanks for any support you can provide.

If he's not using BitLocker encryption, you could also plug the drives into another computer. It should work fine unless they're encrypted. I can relate to your feelings; my own mental health has been a struggle too. If you want to chat or need more help, feel free to ask me.

There are also programs out there that let you reset computer passwords. If it's just a username/password issue, that's one way to go. But if the drives are encrypted, that might mean trouble ahead. I'm really sorry for what you're going through.

I'm really sorry for your loss. Have you considered any recovery tools that could help with the password reset? If it’s just a username/password situation, there are options like using bootable USB sticks with special software. Just be cautious when you dive into this.

Sorry to hear about your brother. If it's just a password issue, you can download a tool like Hirens BootCD and use NTPasswd to reset the password. However, if his computer is locked with BitLocker, you might have a tougher road ahead. You can also check if he had any access to his Microsoft account through his phone or emails; it might help in getting to the BitLocker keys.

Good point about using Hirens BootCD. It really helped me get into my old laptop without losing anything!

For sure! If you can manage to get that key, it’s a lot easier than you’d think!

If your brother's drives are encrypted with BitLocker, it might be tough to recover the data unless you have the recovery key. In that case, the best bet might be checking any Microsoft accounts he had, as sometimes the key is stored there. If he wasn’t using BitLocker, you can take the drives out and connect them to a working computer using a USB drive reader. I’d recommend using a forensic bootable Linux distro to access the files safely without risking any data loss. Sorry for your loss. It's a really difficult situation you are in.
