Can I Use an Apple Watch to Stay Connected While Skiing?

I'm in my 50s and feel somewhat tech-savvy once I get the hang of a device, but I've never owned an Apple Watch before. I have an iPhone, and I'm considering getting an Apple Watch to keep in touch with my husband while we go skiing in The Rockies. He doesn't have a phone at all, so I'm wondering if he could wear my Apple Watch with cellular and we could communicate while I have my iPhone. Alternatively, would it work if he used a pre-paid SIM card while we ski? I know this might sound silly, but I really want to make sure we can reach each other if we get separated.

To add on, the Apple Watch can't really be assigned its own phone number for direct calls unless you set it up with a different Apple ID. So, unless you go through some extra steps, you might not be able to call each other directly using just the watch and iPhone. If you’re looking for more reliable communication, maybe consider walkie-talkies for your skiing trip—just in case cell service is spotty!

Great idea! Walkie-talkies could save you a lot of hassle, especially in the mountains!

Just a side note, it's technically called an Apple Watch, not iWatch. If you want to keep it simple, I’d recommend just getting your husband a basic disposable phone for your trip. It’s probably easier than trying to manage calls between the watch and your iPhone, especially if they’re tied to the same Apple ID.

That's a great tip! Plus, if the signal's weak up in the mountains, a phone would probably be more reliable!

Actually, the Apple Watch is pretty neat! If it has cellular capabilities, it can function like a phone without needing your iPhone nearby. I’ve managed to take calls and send messages from my watch even when I left my phone at home. So if your husband wears your Apple Watch, he should be able to communicate with you, as long as it's set up right! Just make sure it has the right plan activated too.

That's awesome! I love that it can act as a phone. Just remember the watch needs its own cellular plan to work independently!
