Hey everyone! I'm dealing with a frustrating internet issue. I've been on a 500mbps plan for about five years, but I've only been seeing download speeds maxing out at 50mbps, and more like 30mbps on average. Upload speeds are around 7-9mbps. I've tried troubleshooting with both my laptops and desktops, and the speeds don't seem to change whether I'm on Wi-Fi or using an Ethernet cable.
Here are some things I've done so far to try and fix it:
- Unplugged and replugged the modem.
- Connected my laptop directly to the modem using an Ethernet cable, bypassing the router.
- Used terminal commands to flush and renew my IP configuration.
- Set the advanced options to the 1gb/500mbps duplex setting.
- Tried a different Cat.5e Ethernet cable (same type but different one).
A little about my setup:
- Internet provider: iFiber
- Router: Netgear AC1750
- Modem: SMC Networks D3CM1604V-400
- Using a Cat.5e Ethernet cable that claims to support 1000mbps.
- Cable internet connection
If anyone has tips or needs more info to help me troubleshoot, I'd really appreciate it!

I feel your pain! It sounds like you’ve already tried a bunch of things. If you find out that your speeds are still low when connected directly, it might be worth reaching out to your ISP. They can run diagnostics on their end to see if there’s a bigger issue. Also, double-check if they have any specific requirements for the modem settings.
Try connecting a laptop that you know can handle high speeds directly to the fiber ONT. Reboot the ONT and run a speed test. If you’re still not getting the speeds you pay for, then it’s likely an issue with your ISP, and they’ll need to resolve it for you. Just a heads up, I noticed you mentioned "iFiber" but also referenced cable internet. Make sure you're connecting properly if the service is coming through coax, as you need to connect directly to the coax modem too.
