I'm trying to help my dad with his old laptop that isn't functioning properly because it's stuck on the X: directory in command prompt. We've attempted to use the command 'cd D:' but it hasn't worked out. I feel like we might be misusing the cd command, and I'm unsure about the correct format.

If all else fails and you need to recover data, consider removing the hard drive and connecting it to another computer. Lenovo ThinkPads are generally straightforward for accessing the hard drive. You can retrieve any important files and then proceed with a clean install of Windows.
