I'm trying to help my dad with his old laptop that isn't functioning properly because it's stuck on the X: directory in command prompt. We've attempted to use the command 'cd D:' but it hasn't worked out. I feel like we might be misusing the cd command, and I'm unsure about the correct format.
Interestingly, his local disk is listed as the D: drive. How do we correctly change the directory to resolve this issue?

If all else fails and you need to recover data, consider removing the hard drive and connecting it to another computer. Lenovo ThinkPads are generally straightforward for accessing the hard drive. You can retrieve any important files and then proceed with a clean install of Windows.
It sounds like you're currently in the Windows PE or a recovery environment. To switch directories, just type the drive letter followed by a colon without any command prefixes. So instead of 'cd D:', try just typing 'D:' to switch to that drive.
Since you're in a recovery console, it would be helpful to know what problems you're facing with the laptop. Are you trying to boot into Windows? If you see an X: prompt, you're likely in some sort of recovery mode. What issues are you encountering specifically?
