What’s the Best AM4 CPU Upgrade for Gaming?

Hey everyone!

I'm looking for some advice on upgrading my CPU. Here are my specs:

- Motherboard: ROG STRIX B550-F Gaming
- GPU: Asus Prime NVIDIA 5060 Ti OC with 16GB
- Current CPU: Ryzen 7 3700X
- RAM: Corsair Vengeance LPX 64GB
- Resolution: 1440p at 165Hz

I've heard that the AMD Ryzen 7 5800X3D is the top choice for AM4, but I know it's discontinued now. The next best option seems to be the Ryzen 7 5800X, but I'm unsure whether the performance boost would be significant compared to what I already have.

My new GPU is great, and I'm concerned about potential CPU bottlenecks in CPU-intensive games since my previous GPU was the AMD Radeon 580X. How much of a difference would a CPU upgrade actually make?

Thanks for your help!

I recently upgraded from a 3700X to a 5800XT and while the difference isn’t drastic, it's definitely worth it. You'll notice better performance in demanding games without it being a night-and-day change.

That's great insight! Can you share where you felt the biggest differences after upgrading?

Upgrading to a Ryzen 5700X or 5800X could be a small but noticeable improvement for your setup. Those options are still reasonably priced and can really help in CPU-heavy tasks.

I made a similar jump, going from a Ryzen 2700X to a 5800XT. The performance boost was definitely there, and despite the extra heating, I'm pretty satisfied with the upgrade!

The Ryzen 5800 series can still be found second-hand, but prices are quite high. I'd recommend looking into Ryzen 5500 or 5600 if you're on a budget, but it all depends on how much you're willing to spend.

Yeah, I've noticed those CPUs are pretty pricey around here too, about €650 in Germany!
